1.5 ml POLYSTYRENE MICROCENTRIFUGE TUBES
(for lipid fractionation research)

We have recently developed in cooperation with Washington university Lipid Research Center a special microcentrifuge tube for use in lipid fractionation studies. It is a 1.5 ml polystyrene tube with a 11 mm high density polyethylene cap. This tube is completely transparent, a feature that is of critical importance here.

Using dextran sulfate to precipitate LDL, followed by centrifugation at 12,000 x g, the HDL is measured in the supernatant and LDL is determined by calculation. In patients with high triglyceride levels (up to 5% of the population) the supernatant may be milky or slightly turbid. If not corrected, this would lead to falsely elevated HDL results. Polypropylene tubes, though contact transparent can mask this turbidity.
